Essential, perhaps best articulates Paul Kalkbrenner’s role in German and global electronic music. Rising from East Berlin’s underground, he came of age as a teenager in the immediate aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Though immersed in rave culture, his vision from an early age was to craft and perform his own music. His inimitable grand techno sound quickly rippled far beyond the confines of his homeland, launching one of contemporary music’s most unique career paths.

Today Kalkbrenner is one of electronic music’s most recognizable stars. He has starred in and soundtracked movies, topped charts, remixed and collaborated with icons, had a football stadium named after him, headlined venues typically reserved for rock stars and amassed millions of fans.

Fittingly his ninth studio album THE ESSENCE perhaps best articulates the key to his continued success. It’s warm, organic, personal and timeless, and without frills. The album is quintessential PK, but with new tricks, including a collaboration with Stromae and an homage to Depeche Mode.

Though his journey has taken him far from his roots in Berlin’s ‘peak techno’ era, Kalkbrenner’s singular live performances and sound remain uncompromised and as imperative as ever. Despite dance music’s changeable trends, he remains one of its most enduring and essential artists.
